James McKinley Hibbard is named after Grand Poppa. His grandmother is quoted as saying, "I wouldn't have named a devil after that man! Not the devil himself!" This was the start of a generational curse that would plague the life of this child and generations to come. James gives a heartbreaking account of violence, deaths, alcoholism, affairs, crimes, immoralities, car wrecks, prison, murder, physical abuse, and much more! Through his eyes we experience his painful moments, his humor, and his desperation to save his children, their children, and all children from such anguish. Is Sin of the Poppas truly a non-fictional book about a generational curse? Or is it just another story of "the devil made me do it" criminal life? Read about the miracles and the tragedies of this author's life. Then, you be the judge!

Rated:

SIN OF THE POPPAS is a truth in what God can do in a person’s life. Jesus traps the monster that lurks inside waiting to strike, then drives that monster out, leaving a new creature with the love of Christ where the hate and violence once was.

I highly recommend this book. It is heartwarming and heart wincing all at the same time. The reader will be brought to tears one minute and feel the Joy of this man’s salvation the next and will actually see the characters in this true life story, picturing them in the readers own mind.

This book tells of a family cursed with abuse from one generation to generation. Abuse that fills a child with anger and hate until all that is left of the child is an exploding spirit hiding in the deepest part of his soul. This man does battle with the devil, a war that wages within him between the goodness of Sonny the boy who loved God and Shotgun, the devils disciple. A war that wages for fifty years until Jesus conquers the beast within Shotgun’s soul, allowing the goodness of Sonny to reappear.

In my opinion, THE SIN OF THE POPPAS, is heart wincing. I found myself wanting to take this abused child in my arms and rock him until the pain was not only gone from his body but his mind as well. And with that small gesture, quiet his pain. As I read THE SIN OF THE POPPAS, I felf the power of Almighty God at work in this man as his own forgiveness intertwines with the forgiveness of the wrongs done to him. And one day when he can completely forgive the abusive father who should have been a source of unconditional love, the power of the dark demons will be relinquished and Sonny will return.

So, there is in the end, faith, hope and love, but the greatest of these is love because it is the only one that lasts forever.

A Must Read

The Center That We Seek by Lillie Mae Chipman and Melissa Farmer The Center That We Seek, is the product of a mother and daughter working together as co-authors. Lillie the mom is an abused child, and Melissa is the daughter of an abused child. Lillie opens her wounded heart in an attempt to heal the scars cut deep into her soul. Lillie and Melissa hope that in revealing their dark family secrets, the healing will begin for their tortured family. The both pray their story will save other children in this world from the horrors Lillie and her siblings faced every day of their young lives—and to help others find the safe haven that Lillie and her siblings were denied. Lillie Mae hopes her story will bring about a change—opening the eyes of world to the pain in a child’s eye who is in the same tragic situation. Melissa’s story is just one of so many children who grow up with mothers who are survivors of child abuse. Melissa realizes as her mother’s past is revealed that many others weren’t as lucky as she. She understands her mother’s mood swings and the desperate need to overcome her past, and become the parent she wished her own parents had been—a slow understanding of her mother’s past, and the pain that filled her mother’s nightmares. I myself felt so many emotions while reading The Center That We Seek. These emotions left me at time feeling the hopelessness that Lillie must have felt all through her childhood—a childhood that should have been filled with sunny days and childhood play—and hatred for her father, as his evil personality was revealed throughout her book. Then she discovered the depth of her mother’s illness and how blocked memories about the true nature of her mother tore through her adult life like a tornado touching down causing destruction with each memory held to the light. I recommend The Center That We Seek, and give it a five star rating. It is a book that will bring you to tears, and one you will not be able to put down. Nancy Lee Shrader “IS IT NOW? The End of Days!”

It is said that a river has no memory. As I envision a river splashing along on its journey, I think it is like my life. The memory of abuse is like the water splashing against the rocks, like the tears of abused children unheard throughout life.

From the Publisher

In This Valley I Grew is my own story of growing up in the '50s and '60s in a small Appalachian neighborhood on the outskirts of a town called Inez, population 500. It is a story of hardships, innocence, and faith. It describes the people who lived all around me, who, in some way or other, helped shape and mold my life into what it is today. I can honestly say that there isn't one person in my childhood who left such a negative impression on me that I'd rather not remember him or her. It is my prayer that those of you who read my stories get the feeling that I am just talking to you face to face, in a relaxed way, recounting the events of my life as I remember them and that you find yourself reliving them with me, or better yet, that they bring back your memory, things you had long forgotten, and that a smile might cross your lips and make your day a little brighter. If you don't like sentiment then you probably won't like this book, for that is the only way I know how to tell it, through the eyes of love as I saw it and through my heart's emotions as I felt them. God Bless!

 A Must Read!

Review:

WomensSelfesteem.com Phyllis Benton was born and raised in McKinley, Maine, a small fishing harbor community. She was one of eight children and was raised in a house with no running water or electricity. Her mother was usually always cooking, cleaning or tending to the children. Her father was always working menial jobs and did what he could to feed his family. Phyllis grew up only knowing what was in her world. Her world was not full of riches it was in fact very meager. Phyllis’s world took a tremendous turn for the worst when her mother left for an easier life. Phyllis’s father had no choice but to hand his eight children over to the county for foster care. This is where her journey of true survival began. Phyllis went from many foster homes to a marriage that failed and then on to an even more horrific life as a battered wife. Phyllis Benton’s desire to survive as you will reads in her book is amazing and she has proven to be a very strong woman. Her ability to complete and earn a college degree in Office Systems Technology from Mitchell Community College in North Carolina was one of her highest moments in her journey of life. I am honored to have been asked to review Phyllis’s book. It is truly a journey of strength and survival. About the Book: Living Nightmares of Abuse 'Living Nightmares of Abuse' is a very well written biography. Phyllis shows great ability in her descriptive techniques with every word she uses in writing about her life. This book is one of several types of abuse. Phyllis shares with us through this book her horrors of child abuse, wife battery, and pure fear of being imprisoned and stalked by men in her life that she trusted enough to marry. Living Nightmares of Abuse will make you hate and even want to take action against wife abusers. You will be amazed at the strength that Phyllis finds deep within herself, when she finds herself at the mercy of wife abuse again and again. With no money and no place to go, she continues onward, taking her readers with her through her book, to experience the pain and loneliness that kept her going forward. This book was written in hopes to share a story of survival when one feels up against all odds. Additionally, "Living Nightmares of Abuse" will also bring to you a feeling of joy as Phyllis shares her dream come true when she finally meets a man that not only shows her respect but also teaches her to take life as it comes and to, "not worry about things she cannot change". Recommendation: Womensselfesteem.com highly recommends this book to anyone that feels they are trapped in an abusive relationship and will never get out. Thank you Phyllis for sharing your life with womensselfesteem.com!

From the Author:

I first set out to write about abuse and how it can lead to more abuse from generation to generation. I wanted to be able to possibly write something that would help someone who was being abused, or someone who feels they can be an abuser.
